Hrafnseyri is an old large farm and former vicarage in the Westfjords of Iceland .

location

Hrafnseyri is isolated on the north bank of Arnarfjörður in the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær .

History of the court

At the time of settlement, the farm was simply called Eyri (English: "Sandbank"). The story of the place begins with the landlord Án Grímsson, known for his wicked wife, after whom a mountain in the north-east of the farm is named.

The farm was renamed after a later owner, Hrafn Sveinbjarnarson , probably a historical figure. He lived here in the 12th century and is also the main character in the Hrafn saga , one of the Íslendinga sögur . He was a well-traveled barber and doctor who had received his training in Salerno in Sicily .

However, Hrafnseyri is known as the birthplace of Jón Sigurðsson (1811–1879), an important Icelandic politician and historian who campaigned for the independence of his country in the 19th century. His birthday on June 17th (1811) is Iceland's national holiday . Therefore there is a Jón Sigurðsson Museum in Hrafnseyri.

Volcanism

A central volcano, Tjaldanesfell , which is many million years old and cold , lies in the north-west of the farm. The mountain range is severely eroded, so you intrusions and courses mainly of gabbro can detect. The highest mountain in the Westfjords , Kaldbakur , is located in the northern part of the mountain range.
