Hrastovlje (Italian Cristoglie , German outdated Chrästeirach ) is a village 14 km east of Koper in Slovenia in the Rižana river valley . It has 143 inhabitants. The place lives mainly from agriculture, viticulture ( Moscato ) and tourism.
Trinity Church
The place is famous for the Romanesque Dreifaltigkeitskirche, which was built on a hill not far from the village center. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the 16th century it was surrounded by a defensive wall as protection against Turks and Uskoks .
The interior of the church is painted with medieval peasant frescoes, which were discovered and uncovered in 1949. They show scenes from the Old Testament ( creation story ) and depictions from the life of Jesus . In addition, the Three Wise Men , other saints and local dignitaries are depicted. The church is best known for its dance of death - fresco by the Istrian painter Johannes from Kastav (1490). Under it is an inscription in Glagolitic script .
