Career

Hrihorij Kamyshenko began wrestling as a teenager in 1980. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. He appeared on the international wrestling mat for the first time, still starting for the Soviet Union, at the Junior World Championship in 1990. He won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 54 kg. His next assignment was in 1992 at the European Junior Championships (Espoirs) in Székesfehérvár. Here he started for the Ukraine after the political change in the Soviet Union. He managed to win the featherweight title ahead of Usama Aziz, Sweden, and Jerzy Szeibinger, Poland.

In Ukraine he started for the Gelikon Mariupol sports club and his coach there was Gennadi Uzum. In 1994 it was used for the first time in an international championship among the seniors. At the European Championships in Athens he achieved the greatest success of his career, because he was the new European featherweight champion there ahead of Aghassi Manukjan , Armenia, Ihar Petrenka , Belarus, and Ari Härkänen , Finland. Also at the 1994 World Championships in Tampere, he did quite well with a 5th place. The winner there was Sergei Martynow from Russia.

In 1995, Hrihorij Kamyshenko achieved only average results at the international championships. At the European Championships this year in Besançon he started in the lightweight and finished in 11th place and at the World Championships in Prague, where he competed again in the featherweight division, he only came in 19th place.

1996 was a much better year for him. In March 1996 he was in Budapest in featherweight behind Sergei Martynow and ahead of Mchitar Manukjan , Armenia, and Włodzimierz Zawadzki Vice European Champion and at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he reached a respectable 6th place in featherweight. He won over Winston Santos Fuentes, Venezuela, and Mchitar Manukjan and then lost to Włodzimierz Zawadzki, who became Olympic champion , to Akif Pirim , Turkey, and in the fight for 5th place also to Ivan Radnew from Bulgaria.

In the following years he took part in international championships, alternating in featherweight and lightweight, until 2002. He did not win any more medals, but always showed great commitment and sometimes achieved good placements. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he reached an 8th place in featherweight. He won against Rasoul Amani, New Zealand, lost against Beat Motzer, Switzerland, and won over Yasutoki Motoki, Japan. In his last year with international championships he finished 6th at the European championship in Seinäjoki in the lightweight category and won against Włodzimierz Zawadzki and lost to Manuchar K Wirkwelia from Georgia.
