He appeared on the international wrestling mat for the first time, still starting for the Soviet Union, at the Junior World Championship in 1990. He won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 54 kg. His next assignment was in 1992 at the European Junior Championships (Espoirs) in Székesfehérvár. Here he started for the Ukraine after the political change in the Soviet Union. He managed to win the featherweight title ahead of Usama Aziz, Sweden, and Jerzy Szeibinger, Poland.
In Ukraine he started for the Gelikon Mariupol sports club and his coach there was Gennadi Uzum. In 1994 it was used for the first time in an international championship among the seniors. At the European Championships this year in Besançon he started in the lightweight and finished in 11th place and at the World Championships in Prague, where he competed again in the featherweight division, he only came in 19th place.

In the following years he took part in international championships, alternating in featherweight and lightweight, until 2002. He did not win any more medals, but always showed great commitment and sometimes achieved good placements. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he reached an 8th place in featherweight. He won against Rasoul Amani, New Zealand, lost against Beat Motzer, Switzerland, and won over Yasutoki Motoki, Japan. In his last year with international championships he finished 6th at the European championship in Seinäjoki in the lightweight category and won against Włodzimierz Zawadzki and lost to Manuchar K Wirkwelia from Georgia.
