Hubert Klocker

Hubert Klocker (born July 16, 1955 ) is an Austrian art, theater and film scholar and curator with a research focus on Viennese actionism , performance theory and performative tendencies in contemporary art. He has written several fundamental publications on Viennese Actionism and has been director of the Friedrichshof Collection at Friedrichshof in Zurndorf and Vienna since 1991 .

Life

Klocker studied theater, film and media studies at the University of Vienna and at the Center for 20th Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin with Robert W. Corrigan, Ihab Hassan and Herbert Blau . He received his doctorate in 1983 with a dissertation on Hermann Nitsch's orgies and mysteries theater .

In the 1980s and 90s he curated several exhibitions on Viennese Actionism, including a retrospective of the works of Günter Brus , Otto Muehl , Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler in the Albertina. As part of this exhibition, the publication Wiener Aktionismus - Der Geschrümmerte Spiegel 1963–1972 (2 vols.) Was published , which for the first time contains a chronological documentation of all actions in addition to basic texts. Together with Eva Badura-Triska, the catalog raisonné for Rudolf Schwarzkogler's oeuvre followed in 1992.

In 1998 he founded the CharimKlocker gallery. Until he left in 2002, he realized exhibitions with works by John Baldessari, Linda Benglis, Erwin Bohatsch, Alfons Schilling, John Bock, Milica Tomic, Matthew Antezzo, Anna and Bernhard Blume, Siegrun Appelt, Christopher Williams, Steven Prina, Axel Hütte, and Tracey Moffatt, Christopher Wool, Otto Muehl.

Since 1991 he has headed the Friedrichshof Collection, the most extensive private collection of historical works of Viennese Actionism, and manages the complete works of the Austrian artist Otto Muehl. In 2002 he initiated and accompanied the takeover of part of the Friedrichshof collection by the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok) and the establishment of the actionism archive at mumok. In 2006 he prepared the realignment of the Friedrichshof Collection as a publicly accessible exhibition institute and commissioned the redesign of the exhibition rooms for the collections. Since 2010, Klocker has been promoting the contextualization of the holdings through guest exhibitions by international artists such as Paul McCarthy , Allan Kaprow , Carolee Schneemann , Rita Ackermann, Bjarne Melgaard and many more

In 2019 he founded the Otto Muehl Estate, which for the first time manages the artist's entire estate.
