Hubertus Mynarek (born April 6, 1929 in Groß Strehlitz , Upper Silesia ) is a German philosopher , theologian , former Catholic priest, author, university professor and church critic .

Life

Mynarek grew up in a Catholic home. The NSDAP suggested that he attend a Nazi elite school , but his father forbade him to do so. Instead, he attended high school in Groß Strehlitz. In 1945 Mynarek was taken prisoner in Poland. While in custody, he made the decision to become a Catholic priest. He studied theology , philosophy and psychology and graduated in 1952 with an exam on theological aspects with the philosopher Max Scheler . 1953 Mynarek became a Catholic priest ordained . In 1954 he received his doctorate on Johannes Hessen's philosophy of religious experience .

In 1958 Mynarek moved to the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1966 was appointed professor for fundamental theology and religious studies at the University of Bamberg . In 1968 he moved to the University of Vienna as a professor of religious studies . At this faculty he was first vice dean (deputy dean), then dean .

Mynarek is married and has three children. He lives in Odernheim near Bad Kreuznach .

Exit from the Church

In 1972 Mynarek wrote an open letter to Pope Paul VI. in which he called for the abolition of celibacy and the democratization of the Catholic Church. In the same year he resigned from the church and married. According to him, he was the first university professor of German-speaking theology in the 20th century to leave the Catholic Church. In 1972 his church license to teach was revoked. He was then forced into retirement by the Austrian state. Mynarek sees this as proof of the extensive interdependence between church and state, which in Austria and Germany often leads to the suppression of opinions critical of the church.

In most of his books - for example in Lords and Servants of the Church , Eros and Clergy and The Pope Disenchantment - he criticizes in detail the teaching of the Catholic Church and its visible effects. He throws the church her u. a. hierarchical undemocratic structure and the lack of equal rights for women. Mynarek also criticizes the Catholic Church's sexual morality - the main theme of the book Eros and Clergy . In the book Lords and Servants of the Church , which is autobiographical, he criticized the behavior of church representatives that he himself experienced.

Engagement in organizations

Mynarek has been working as a freelance writer ever since. He was a co-founder of the Federal Working Group Christians in the Greens ; but he only belonged to the party for a short time. In the 1970s he approached the German Unitarian religious community , on whose behalf he wrote his book Orientation in Dasein in 1979 . Mynarek wrote numerous articles for the magazine this side , the main publication and membership magazine of the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD), and for the magazine Enlightenment and Criticism , of which he is co-editor. His book The New Inquisition was published in 1999 by the publisher Das White Horse, which is closely related to Universal Life . In the Bad Sobernheim community he ran for the Left Party in the 2009 local elections.
