The Hueber Verlag ( [ˈhuːbɐ] , bair. [ˈHuːbər] , [ˈhuːaba] or [ˈhuːava] ) based in Munich is an international family company and one of the leading foreign language publishers for teaching and teaching materials in adult and further education. Over 30 languages ​​are currently taught using Hueber materials. Textbooks and self-study materials, lexicons, vocabulary and grammars, audio books and readings as well as specialist literature are part of the program. Hueber is the global market leader in the field of German as a foreign language .

Hueber Verlag employs 150 people worldwide (as of June 2013) and has been based in Munich since November 2013. In addition to the headquarters in Bavaria , the publishing house has 12 sales offices worldwide and two subsidiaries abroad. The publishing services in Gilching have been delivering the publisher's products since April 2014 . The management of the publishing house is the responsibility of the three managing directors Michaela Hueber , Marion Kerner and Sylvia Tobias. Michaela Hueber has been running the publishing house in the third generation since 1986.

history

Max Hueber, owner of the university bookstore in Munich's Amalienstraße since 1911, founded Max Hueber Verlag in 1921. In 1922, Max Hueber developed the first project for the interpretation of French texts with the Romanist Helmut Hatzfeld. Other authors from the young publishing house also came from the field of Romance studies . At the end of the 1920s, theology and philosophy were added as additional publishing areas. A few hundred titles had appeared by the Second World War.

In 1943 the entire inventory of the publishing house was destroyed; until 1949 the publishing work was suspended. In 1949 Ernst Hueber, son of the publisher's founder, rebuilt the publishing house. Foreign languages have been included in the program. In the following years they formed the focus of the publishing work.

The "German Language Teaching for Foreigners" by Dora Schulz and Heinz Griesbach was a milestone in the history of publishing in 1955: the first chapter for the successful German as a foreign language publishing branch was written. From 1955, Ernst Hueber was also significantly involved in the development of the Goethe Institute . The teaching of the German language became a central concern of Hueber.

Together with the Adult Education Association , a well-founded system for goal-oriented learning was developed in 1964. The language program of the publishing house grew steadily and required an expansion of staff and space. The main building in Munich's Amalienstraße became too narrow, so Max Hueber Verlag moved to a new publishing house in Ismaning in 1970.

In 1976 the first information center for teachers was opened in Düsseldorf , which was to serve as an exhibition space and a place for meeting and exchanging ideas.

Ernst Hueber died at the height of his publishing career in 1977 at the age of only 53. The company was temporarily continued by Ilse Hueber, his sister. In 1986 Michaela Hueber, daughter of Ernst Hueber, took over the management of the company as managing partner and publisher.

Between 1989 and 1992 the importance of the Max Hueber Verlag grew with the increasing number of repatriates from eastern countries who want to learn the German language. At the same time, the publishing house expanded its position as a priority through cooperation agreements, company investments with foreign partners and the establishment of its own companies abroad. The "Verlag für Deutsch" with its highly specialized offer in the areas of grammar, self-study and additional materials was affiliated 100 percent to the Hueber Group in 1991. In 1993 an information center was opened in Munich, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Goethe Institute.

From 1996 onwards, CD-ROMs were developed for interactive learning on the PC as well as numerous products especially for self-study. The third Hueber information center was opened in the center of the federal capital, Berlin .

With the goal of “bundling strengths” and “expanding market leadership in the German as a foreign language segment”, the management decided in 2000 to concentrate on the Hueber brand and integrated the German publishing house into Max Hueber Verlag.

In 2005, the Max Hueber Verlag commemorated its pioneer Ernst Hueber (1923–1977), who in 1955 set a milestone in the still young subject German for foreigners with the publication of the legendary “Schulz / Griesbach” with numerous campaigns under the motto “Languages ​​overcome borders” would have. The “German Language Teaching for Foreigners”, which quickly became a standard textbook and a worldwide bestseller, established the success story of the publishing house as a leading provider of teaching materials in the field of German as a foreign language.

Ten years after the last fundamental change, Hueber Verlag appeared with a new umbrella brand in 2006. A further development of the logo, the company's own typeface and the slogan “Joy in Languages” form the new brand architecture. As part of the new brand identity, Max Hueber Verlag changes its name to Hueber Verlag.

In 2011 the publishing house celebrated 90 years of Hueber Verlag and 25 years of management by Michaela Hueber.

Digital teaching packages, interactive course books and materials for Moodle have been consolidating the publisher's role in the field of methodology / didactics since 2012.

In November 2013, after 42 years in Ismaning, the publishing house returned to Munich, to Baubergerstrasse. 30 in the Moosach district.

On January 1, 2014, Hueber took over the publishing portfolio of digital publishing AG and expanded its range to include award-winning language learning software, audio courses and audio books.

Since April 2014, the publisher has also been breaking new ground when it comes to distribution: The publishing service in Gilching near Munich has taken over the complete delivery of the program from Hueber and its partners.

Cooperations

For many years, Hueber Verlag has been cooperating with various partners who complement and enrich the Hueber portfolio.

Hueber has had a close partnership with Macmillan , the world's leading provider of English language teaching titles, for over 10 years.

Since 2007 there has been a sales cooperation between Hueber and Auralog for the German and Austrian book trade. Auralog is the specialist in language learning software and was the first provider to integrate sophisticated speech recognition technology into its products.

In 2008, Hueber and the electronics company Casio pooled their sales and marketing activities in the field of electronic dictionaries. The electronic dictionaries of the EX-word series have since been sold by Hueber in German bookshops . Since 2013, Hueber has also been selling electronic dictionaries in Austrian and Swiss bookshops.

Since the beginning of 2010, Hueber has been selling Edition bi: libri's multilingual children's books worldwide.

The language and travel games from Grubbe Media have been part of the Hueber program since May 2014.

In the foreign language sector, we have long-term collaborations with the French publishers Hachette and Clé, among others. A worldwide cooperation for Italian as a foreign language exists with Alma Edizioni. Since the beginning of 2014 there has been an intensive collaboration with Sgel in the Spanish segment.
