Oliver Karbus (born March 30, 1956 in Bad Ischl ) is an Austrian director , actor , author and translator .

Life

Karbus was born in Bad Ischl as the son of the actress Gertrude Karbus, née Kügler, and the architect Heinz Karbus . He grew up in the Salzkammergut and passed his Matura at the Bad Ischler Realgymnasium in 1975. After his military service in the Austrian Armed Forces , he was accepted at the Krauss Drama School in Vienna in 1977 and graduated in 1979 , also after studying privately with Vera Balser-Eberle . In 1979 he met the actress Irmgard Sohm in Vienna. A long-term relationship developed. In 1984 a son was born. In 1998 he married the Viennese psychologist Christine Pinterich. In 2000 a daughter was born. The marriage was divorced in 2002. Karbus has lived in Landshut with the journalist Maria Bullok since 2005 . The two are married and have had a daughter since 2009.

Acting activities

After completing his acting training, he worked at the Biel / Solothurn City Theater in Switzerland . In 1980 he went on a European tour with the theater ensemble package . Oliver Karbus played a leading role in the television series The 5th Season by Felix Mitterer . In 1982 he was engaged at the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck , in 1983 he moved to the Landestheater Linz . From there he was engaged in 1985 by acting director Hansjörg Utzerath at the Städtische Bühnen Nürnberg , where he played the roles of Fetzer in Nigel Williams Class Enemy , Stoppel in Utzerath's adaptation of Quex , Voland in Utzerath's dramatization of Bulgakow's Der Meister and Margarita , Alceste in Molières The misanthropist and played Leontes in William Shakespeare's Winter Tales . Oliver Karbus played and plays in numerous television films, including the leading role alongside Hannelore Elsner in the ZDF “Herzkino” film Ein Sommer im Burgenland (2014).

Directorial work

From 1987 Oliver Karbus gradually switched to directing. He took over the artistic direction at the Volkstheater Fürth. In 1991 he staged the operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss at the Nuremberg Opera House . In 1997 Oliver Karbus staged the Wallenstein Festival in Altdorf with 300 participants. From autumn 1997 he became senior director at the Landestheater Coburg . Since the change of artistic director in 2001, Karbus has been working as a freelance director. At the Staatstheater Nürnberg, Staatstheater Karlsruhe , Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, Theater Heilbronn , Landestheater Niederbayern , Theater Augsburg , Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck , Stadttheater Ingolstadt , Stadttheater Bruneck , Rittner Sommerspiele , at the Schlossfestspiele Tirol, Theaterverein Trauterfing eV, the Merano Festival and at the Kempten Theater. In 2020 Oliver Karbus took over the interim artistic direction of the Tyrolean Volksschauspiele in Telfs .

Literary works

In parallel or in connection with his other activities, Oliver Karbus works as a writer, translator and literary mediator. In 1972 he was one of the co-founders of the literary magazine "Pensum Literarum" in the Salzkammergut, in which he published poems and short prose until 1975. Further publications in Austrian literary magazines such as Pensum litterarum , Die Rampe , Sterz or projekt-IL , as well as many publications of both own plays and Shakespeare translations ( A Midsummer Night's Dream , Othello , Romeo and Juliet , Much Ado About Nothing , What you want ) and Sophocles translations ( King Oedipus , Antigone ) for the Austrian theater publisher Thomas Sessler followed.
