Heinz Karbus (born February 21, 1927 in Bad Ischl ; † February 1, 2015 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Heinz Karbus was born as the fourth child of Maria, née Karbus, widowed Leschetizky-Puchinger. He spent his youth in the summer villa of the legendary pianist, piano teacher and composer Theodor Leschetitzky in Bad Ischl, who inherited that of his daughter-in-law (she was married to Robert Leschetizky , the only son of Theodor Leschetizky and his 2nd wife Annette Essipoff ). Karbus came into contact with music and literature at an early age in this house, which was particularly due to his half-sister, the pianist Ilse Leschetizky . He completed his primary school in Bad Ischl at the Protestant elementary school and the public boys' high school, an elementary school semester with his uncle in Tetschen in Czechoslovakia .

Starting in 1941, Heinz Karbus continued his training at the Hallstatt Wood School in Hallstatt in the construction and cabinet making department. Here he completed his carpenter apprenticeship. His teachers were the brothers Ferdinand Peter, a student of Heinrich Tessenow and the architect Hans Peter, a student of Oskar Strnad . On their recommendation, he applied to the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 1944 , but could not begin his studies because he was first drafted into the Reich Labor Service for earthwork and forest work on the Ostwall in Silesia and Poland and then to the German Wehrmacht . After training in Wels and Nuremberg and briefly at the front in the tank battle in the Aschaffenburg and Würzburg area , he became an American prisoner of war, where he worked as a carpenter, bartender and interpreter at the United States Air Force base near Laon . At Christmas 1945 he was able to return home to Bad Ischl and worked as a carpenter and construction draftsman in the Alfred Koller joinery.

In 1946 he finally began studying at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna - initially in the general class, but soon in the master class for architecture, which was directed by Oswald Haerdtl . During the holidays he made detailed drawings for Viennese architects and worked in the studio of the architect Karl Schwanzer .

In 1949 Heinz Karbus was invited as a student nominated by the Academy to the International Summer Seminar for Architecture and Urban Planning at American Universities in Haslev / Copenhagen . There he received formative impressions of Scandinavian architecture, especially the work of Arne Jacobsen . In 1950 he was awarded the State Prize of the Ministry of Education for his diploma project on the new building of the Haashaus on Stephansplatz in Vienna , which was destroyed by bombs in the war . In 1951 he founded his architecture studio in Bad Ischl and married the actress Gertrude Kugler in 1955. In 1956 and 1961 the children Heinz-Oliver and Gabriele were born.

From 1962 to 1989 Karbus taught design and construction of wooden furniture as well as building joinery at the HTBLA Hallstatt . In 1983 he was appointed senior teacher by the then Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger . For health reasons, Heinz Karbus had to close his studio in 1989 and stop teaching. From 1994 to 1999 he did his doctorate at the Technical University of Vienna at the Institute for Architecture and Art History, Building Research and Monument Preservation (Prof. Martin Kubelik) on "Structural development of the health resorts Bad Ischl and Karlsbad / Karlovy Vary from their beginnings up to 1997".
