Hugo Aurelius von Wangelin

Hugo Aurelius of Wangelin (* 11. July 1818 in Pförten in the Lower Lausitz , then Prussia , now Poland , † 26. February 1883 in Belleville , St. Clair County (Illinois) , United States ) was a brevet - Brigadier General of the northern states of the USA during of the American Civil War .

Life

Von Wangelin comes from the Mecklenburg noble family Von Wangelin . During the Civil War he was a colonel with the 12th Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment was under the command of US General Charles R. Woods and fought, among other things, in the Battle of Ringgold Gap in northern Georgia on the border with Tennessee . In this battle, von Wangelin lost his right arm.

For his heroic, meritorious service, Wangelin was awarded the Brevet rank of Brigadier of the United States Volunteers on March 13, 1865 . After the end of the Civil War, he was first appointed Postmaster of Belleville, an office he held for eight years. He later served as a city clerk in St. Louis , Missouri until 1879 . He died where he lived in Belleville and is buried there in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
