Hugo Gerard Ströhl (born September 24, 1851 in Wels , † December 7, 1919 in Mödling ) was an Austrian heraldist .

Life

Hugo Gerard Ströhl was born in the Upper Austrian city of Wels in 1851 . As a boy he showed a lot of talent for drawing and was a student at the arts and crafts school of the Austrian Museum for Art and Industry, which later became the University of Applied Arts in Vienna . After graduating from this school, he worked for the satirical weekly newspaper Die Bombe until 1876 . He became a teacher and opened a studio for cabaret and graphics.

In 1890 he published an Austro-Hungarian coat of arms with hundreds of state and municipal coats of arms . Nine years later, in 1899, he published a heraldic atlas, a model book of coats of arms.

Ströhl also became known through his interest in Japan and his publications on the Mon , the ancient Japanese heraldry.

Work

In the St. Karl Borromäuskirche in the Geriatric Center Am Wienerwald , 130 coats of arms of the Viennese guilds were attached to sketches by Hugo Gerard (sic) Ströhl.
