Hugo Haase (carousel builder)

Hugo Haase (born June 1, 1857 in Winsen (Luhe) , † September 13, 1933 in Hanover ) was a German carousel builder. In the decades around 1900 he revolutionized the amusement industry on the fairs of Central Europe. He is considered to be the creator of innovative attractions for carousels , the Autodrom and the roller coaster . He had worked his way up to a small family and was known for his social sentiments.

Life

Hugo Haase learned the metalworking trade and founded a company in the Harz Mountains and in Leipzig, which later moved to Hanover . In 1902 he presented a. a. his carousel palace at the Munich Oktoberfest . In 1907 Haase built his famous three-disc carousel El Dorado in Leipzig . It was sold to New York's Coney Island amusement park in 1910 for $ 150,000 , came to Osaka for the 1970 World's Fair and is now in an amusement park in Tokyo's Nerima district . It is the oldest carousel in the world that is still in operation.

In 1914 Hugo Haase opened his own amusement park in Hamburg-Stellingen - the largest of its kind after Coney Island at the time. More than 1.6 million marks are said to have been invested in the park, which offered numerous attractions: mountain scenery train, water train, a " Living Maze ”and a beer garden restaurant with more than 5,000 seats. The park - with its own power station - was successfully managed in cooperation with the neighboring Hagenbeck zoo ; but closed in 1922 due to a lack of visitors.
