Hugo Rühl

Hugo Rühl (born October 10, 1845 in Anklam , † October 17, 1922 in Stettin ) was a German gymnastics teacher and sports functional . For more than 25 years he managed the business of the German Gymnastics Association .

Life

Hugo Rühl was the son of a brass caster . After attending the Anklamer grammar school, he studied philosophy at the University of Greifswald from 1863 , where he also received training as a gymnastics teacher. In 1868 he received his doctorate . He then worked in Gahlkow as a tutor for the von Vahl family.

After participating in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/71 , he became an assistant teacher at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin. In 1874 he took over the chairmanship of the Szczecin Gymnastics Club and contributed to its rise. In 1884 he founded the Pomeranian Gymnastics Teachers' Association, which he chaired for a long time. In 1873 he became a senior teacher at the Szczecin City High School. In the same year he was elected to the city council. From 1900 to 1912 he was a member of the city administration as a city school councilor. Rühl campaigned for the promotion of gymnastics. Numerous gyms, playgrounds and gymnastics fields were built during his tenure.

From 1893 to 1919 Rühl was managing director of the German Gymnastics Association and then an honorary member. From 1907 he represented the gymnastics club in the German Reich Committee for the Olympic Games (DRAfOS).

He published numerous essays on sports topics in daily newspapers and specialist magazines. His book on the history of the development of gymnastics has been published several times.

The large sports and gymnastics field opened in Szczecin in 1925 was named Rühl-Kampfbahn in his honor .
