Hugo Stadtmüller (born October 24, 1845 in Gamshurst , Baden , † January 25, 1906 in Heidelberg ) was a German classical philologist .

life and work

Hugo Stadtmüller, the son of a teacher, grew up in the village of Buchen (Odenwald) and attended the community school there from 1854. From 1859 he attended the lyceum in Mannheim, where he decided to study classical philology under the impression of his teachers. From 1864 to 1867 he studied at the University of Heidelberg , where he was particularly influenced by Hermann Köchly , who at that time reformed the Baden school system. For financial reasons, Stadtmüller did not finish his studies with a doctorate , but went to an educational institution for girls in Darmstadt as a private tutor. From 1868 to 1869 he was the tutor of a Russian family who spent the summer in Heidelberg and the winter in Nice.

From Easter 1869 Stadtmüller was in the Baden school service, first as a candidate in Pforzheim, later (November 14, 1870) at the high school in Wertheim, where he was appointed high school professor in 1872. In August 1874 he moved to the Heidelberg high school, where he worked until his death. During the more than thirty years that he lived in Heidelberg, Stadtmüller worked intensively on the Greek poets and the manuscripts of the Heidelberg University Library . His main research interests were the Attic tragedians , the lyricists and the epigrammatists . His greatest work, in addition to various text-critical studies and a hand edition of the Greek poets (1883), was the three-volume critical edition (1894–1906) of the Greek anthology . After the publication of the first volume, the Philosophical Faculty of Heidelberg University made him an honorary doctorate.

Stadtmüller died on January 25th, 1906 after a long illness. Part of his scientific legacy, including personal copies and collations, is in the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe.
