Hugo Tschirky (born January 20, 1938 in St. Gallen ) is a scientist in the field of technology and innovation management .

Life

Hugo Tschirky was born as the son of Josef Tschirky (born 1907 in Wil, Canton St. Gallen) and Franziska Tschirky, geb. Bagattini (born in 1906 in Rorschach, Canton St. Gallen).

education

After attending primary school (1945–1951) and the cantonal school in St. Gallen (1951–1957), Hugo Tschirky studied mechanical engineering specializing in process , control and nuclear technology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ) in Zurich (1959–1963) . He then worked as an assistant at the ETHZ and obtained his doctorate. sc. techn. at Walter Hälg in the field of nuclear technology. Both his diploma thesis and his dissertation were awarded the ETH medal .

Activity in business

From 1968 to 1971 he worked as a development engineer at the Gulf General Atomic research laboratory in San Diego. His task included analyzes and solutions to safety issues relating to fast nuclear reactors. During the years 1971-1975 Hugo Tschirky served as CEO , the Carl Zeiss (Switzerland) AG. At the same time, he wrote a second dissertation at the ETHZ, this time in the field of business administration. Following the socio-technical concept according to Eberhard Ulich , the work developed an understanding of leadership that should create a balance between leadership technique and leadership behavior.

His next managerial role was to manage Cerberus AG (since 1998 part of Siemens Building Technologies as Cerberus Division ). The Swiss manufacturer of ionization smoke detectors , founded in 1941, was the global market leader for fire protection technology. As the successor to company founder Ernst Meili , Hugo Tschirky led the company from 1975–82, first as a member of the management and then as president. Under Tschirky's direction, among other things, the USA business was intensified and an area for applied research on sensor technology was created, the results of which formed the basis for the Algorex fire alarm system introduced in 1994.

Worked at the ETH Zurich

In 1982 Hugo Tschirky was appointed full professor for corporate management at the ETH Zurich. This task, which was oriented towards teaching, research and consulting, focused on the strategic management of technology and innovation-intensive companies. Hugo Tschirky was also the head of the Business Administration Institute (BWI) at ETH for many years and was therefore responsible for the postgraduate degree (NDS) in business administration. Tschirky retired in March 2003.

Consultancy

Tschirky worked as an expert in international arbitration proceedings in the dispute between the Iranian state and the French company Eurodif and others. The controversial issue, which has been negotiated several times since 1979, concerned the unilateral termination of the cooperation in the field of nuclear energy use, which was agreed in 1974 under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, after the Iranian revolution. Agreement was only reached in 1991. Another mandate dealt with the reasons for the considerable budget overrun in the construction of the Leibstadt nuclear power plant . Tschirky reports influenced the creation of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) , the formation of the agricultural cooperative association Fenaco and the merger of the two Swiss sugar factories to form the Aarberg and Frauenfeld AG sugar factories (now Schweizer Zucker AG ).

In 2005, Hugo Tschirky was appointed to the International Visiting Committee of the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University . The committee of 14 university and industry representatives from Europe and the USA led by Lord Alec Broers was supposed to advise the management of the department on strategic issues.

Non-university activity

In addition to his university activities, Hugo Tschirky remained connected to the practice through various board memberships. These include mandates at Canon Switzerland , Jelmoli (temporarily as Chairman of the Board of Directors ), Board of Trustees of the Novartis Research Foundation (since 1998), BB-Industrie, Dräger Safety Schweiz AG, Unilever Schweiz AG, new medical technologies AG, ATV Advanced Technology Ventures AG, Connex Verkehr AG, Helbling Management Consulting AG, LogObject AG, MSI Dr. Wälti AG, SONAC Inc (Japan), Global Advanced Technology Innovation Consortium (GATIC) (founder, 2002), GATIC Japan KK., Swiss Blue Energy AG and Swiss 3D Tec AG (Chairman of the Board).

In the Swiss Army, Hugo Tschirky served as a militia officer in the mountain infantry, most recently as a colonel. As a longtime chief of the Train Mountain Army Corps Geb AK 3 , he was actively involved in the reorganization of the army army 95 with the aim of Train troops continue to maintain. Between 1982 and 2004 he was a member of the Federal Armaments Commission and headed this body as its president from 1999.

Academic work

Hugo Tschirky is the author of numerous textbooks and specialist publications. Work that establishes connections between the research streams of business systems theory and technology management, which up until his publications were viewed as disjointed, is of particular importance . In it Tschirky counteracts the weaknesses of widespread technology management concepts that he postulates with an approach that understands the successful management of technological change as a challenge for the whole company. Further publications are devoted to topics such as “ Technology Intelligence ”, “Technology Acquisition” and “Technology Marketing”.

Tschirky's work on the topic of “Structured Creativity”, an interdisciplinary process that aims to enable companies to use creativity in a more targeted manner to develop innovative business and product ideas, also received international attention. In 1992, Hugo Tschirky taught and researched at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, where he held a course on "Management of Technology" and conducted surveys at Japanese and Swiss companies operating in Japan on the management structure in practice and the requirements for business success in the Japanese market performed. A research project realized in 2002 at the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology dealt with the deepening of the management concept "Enterprise Science" for technology and innovation-intensive companies.

Hugo Tschirky's works have been published in German, English, Japanese and Russian. Hugo Tschirky is a researcher thanks to his many years of experience at various Japanese universities such as Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology - JAIST, Ritsumeikan University, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies - GRIPS and Tohoku University as well as his consulting work for Japanese companies , Author and consultant known and respected in Japan. During 2007–2012 he was also an advisor to the President of the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo.

During his time as a professor at the ETHZ, Hugo Tschirky successfully supervised numerous young scientists in the context of their doctorates and habilitations. On his initiative, the European Institute for Technology and Innovation Management (EITIM) was founded in 2000. This interest group of technical universities included the Chalmers University of Technology, the University College Dublin, the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), the Technical University Berlin, the Cambridge University, the École Centrale Paris, the Politecnico di Milano, the Sabanci University Istanbul , the Dutch University of Twente and the ETH Zurich. The unifying guiding principle was and is the joint implementation of research work with the aim of improving Europe's ability to innovate, which is significantly weaker than that of the USA and Japan. The variety of activities selected for this included jointly supervised doctoral theses, top executive seminars and jointly written specialist articles and book publications. The complementary organization EITIMdoc was created a few years ago to specifically promote young researchers.

Since his retirement, Hugo Tschirky has continued to do regular teaching duties, especially in the context of executive management programs at ETH Zurich and at renowned universities in Japan and Slovenia (until 2011).
