Hugo V (Burgundy)
Hugo V (* 1294 ; † probably on May 9, 1315 in Argilly ) was Duke of Burgundy and Titular King of Thessaloniki from 1306 to 1315. He was the son of Duke Robert II and Agnes of France , who in turn was a daughter of the king Louis IX was. Since he was a minor when his father died, his mother took over the reign for him.
At a young age he was betrothed to Catherine of Valois-Courtenay , titular empress of Constantinople , daughter of Charles I of Valois and Catherine de Courtenay , also titular empress of Constantinople. After the death of his wife in 1307, however, Karl von Valois found that the heir to the imperial title needed someone at her side who would be able to retake Constantinople . He broke off the engagement to Hugo in exchange for a generous compensation scheme:
- Hugo V was betrothed to Joan of France (1311-1349), daughter of the future King Louis X. - although the ecclesiastical approval of the marriage was still in doubt, since Johanna was the daughter of his sister Margaret of Burgundy .
- his sister Johanna von Burgund received Courtenay and married Charles' eldest son Philip, who later became King Philip VI.
- his brother Ludwig married Mathilde von Hennegau , heiress of the Principality of Achaja and the Despotate Morea , daughter of Florence of Hainaut and Isabella of Villehardouin .
King Philip IV knighted him in 1313. Hugo V. died two years later without having led his fiancée to the altar.
