Hugo Van Aken

Hugo Karel Van Aken (* 2. March 1951 in Mechelen , Belgium ) is a Belgian doctor and had since August 1995 Professor (C4) of anesthesiology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and director of the Department of Anesthesiology, surgical critical care and pain management of University Hospital Münster . He retired in 2016.

Career

After studying human medicine at the Catholic University of Leuven from 1969 to 1976, Hugo Van Aken passed his medical state examination in 1976. In July of the same year, he received his doctorate in de Genees, Heel and raffle ( doctor of medicine , surgery and obstetrics ) with the title magna cum laude .

After various activities as an assistant in the department of anesthesiology or the clinic for anesthesiology at the Catholic University of Leuven or at the Wilhelms University of Münster, he was recognized as a specialist in anesthesiology in Belgium. After three months of advanced training in cardiac anesthesia in the USA, he was finally recognized as a specialist in anesthesiology in Germany by the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association . In 1981 he completed his doctorate in Münster and was appointed private lecturer in 1983; He received a position as a private lecturer in grade C2 in 1985. Van Aken acquired additional qualifications and recognition in the field of transfusion medicine, special anesthesiological intensive care medicine, emergency medical services and specialist knowledge of laboratory tests in anesthesiology. In 1995 he was finally given a chair for anesthesiology in Münster. He has been a member of the Leopoldina since 2009 . From 2010 to 2019 Hugo Van Aken was Secretary General of the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (Bernhard Zwißler was to be succeeded in 2020). Van Aken played a key role in the Helsinki Declaration , initiated in 2010, on the safety of patients under anesthesia .
