Humdrum is a British animated short directed by Peter Peake from 1998.

action

Two shadow puppets sit at the table and are bored. The radio plays La Cucaracha in different interpretations on all channels and only one advertising dog rings the doorbell. One of the two finally suggests guessing shadow figures. He shows the other an unidentifiable figure and uses a few clues to make him recognize a cow. The other, who is actually not in the mood for shadow figure guesses, still shows the perfect picture of a hare, which the other, however, sees as an otter. Even after pictures of carrots the rabbit eats and a cylinder from which the rabbit is pulled, one cannot guess the animal and the other gets angry and accuses the one that any mindless person would be better at guessing and representing than the one. The doorbell rings again and in front of it is exactly the image of the cow that one had shown before. She mooes and the other closes the door.

production

The film is conceived as a self-parody. Already at the beginning of the film, the off-screen asked if there was something interesting on TV and the answer was “No, just such a strange animation thing” with the response “Oh God” (Anything on telly? - Only some weird animation thing. - Oh God.). The figures themselves are figures created in cut-out animation, which, however, only form the basis for the shadow animation, which took place in stop motion . One reason for this was that the film could be produced more cheaply and that a detailed elaboration of the characters could be dispensed with. The fact that the shadow figures create shadow figures themselves, but complain that there is nothing more boring than watching people play shadow, is ironic self-referentiality.

Humdrum has been shown at festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh International Film Festival in August 1998 .

Awards

Humdrum won the Best New British Animation category at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was awarded the Children's Jury Prize at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival .

Humdrum was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 2000, but could not prevail against The Old Man and the Sea . He was also nominated for a BAFTA in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ”.
