Family coat of arms of those of Hundbiß (Humpis)

The Humpis (also Hompis, Humpiss, Huntpiss, Hundbiss, Hundpiz, Huntpitz) were an influential Swabian aristocratic family that emerged from Guelph servants and is now called Hundbiß .

history

Gravestone of Henggi Humpis, dealer of the large Ravensburger trading company

The Humpis (Hundbiß) are a council family of the Free Imperial City of Ravensburg , who first appeared in 1225 and 1258 with Heinrich called Huntpize . A secure line of tribe begins with the city administrator of Ravensburg, Conrad called Humpis , who is mentioned in a document from 1303-1327.

Around 1380 the family merged with the Mötteli von Buchhorn and Muntprat von Konstanz to form the large Ravensburger trading company . With this they drove on a large scale from Ravensburg to trade in cloths and fabrics as far as Spain and Italy. They exchanged and bought precious substances, oriental herbs and spices . The Humpis were the most important members of the largest German trading company. Until the trading company ceased to exist in 1530, they had a major impact on the economic development of southern Germany , especially the Lake Constance region .

On July 10, 1540 there was an increase in the imperial name and coat of arms with "von Waltrams" for Eitelhans Humpis and his brothers. In 1699, Marquard Jacob Hundtbiß von Waltrams was granted the status of imperial baron .

Between 1298 and 1528, the Humpis family held the office of mayor or mayor 77 times. The Humpis family was also a member of the patrician society Zum Esel, founded in 1397 .

They invested their fortune in the acquisition of real estate, or from noble lords with the associated fiefs . Under the emperors Friedrich III. and Maximilian I. they successively reached the lower and higher jurisdictions for these lords and the right to increase their coat of arms with these lords. (see below Humpis von Waltrams and Humpis von Ratzenried). Even before 1488 the Humpis were members of the Knight Society of Sankt Jörgenschild .
