The (also) Hundsmarter is a mountain in the Saxon Ore Mountains , in the south of the municipality of Raschau-Markersbach . It forms the end of a ridge running from the Fichtelberg between Großer Mittweida or Kleiner Mittweida and Pöhlwasser . The upper basin of the Markersbach pumped storage plant , built between 1970 and 1978, is located on it . When it was built, the top of the mountain was flattened. So today forms the ring dam of the upper basin with 848.4 m above sea level. NN the highest point.
Its name can be traced back to the salt transport to Bohemia that used to run through it, mainly with dog carts . Other historically documented names of the mountain are Blöselstein and Blösenstein .
In winter, the Hundsmarter is the starting point for ski hikes on prepared trails ( Hundsmartertrasse ) through the extensive forests of the Fichtelberg area that begin here. It is also popular with visitors because of its good views of the Western Ore Mountains. Once a year, the Ore Mountain Cycle Race takes place here , up to 47 km in length and 1250 meters in altitude. Its longest tour leads, with start and finish near the lower basin at the foot of the mountain, over the ridge and the Fichtelberg.
