The Kleine Mittweida is a left tributary of the Große Mittweida in the Saxon Ore Mountains .
course
The stream rises from several sources in the area between Taufichtig and Dreiberg . Like the almost parallel Große Mittweida, it flows north on the northern slope of the Keilberg-Fichtelberg massif. Over long stretches it has cut a deep valley into the gneiss mica schist . In the upper part it has a height difference of 300 m over a length of about 5 km and thus a gradient of 6%. Almost 200 m before the lower basin of the Markersbach pumped storage plant , it flows into the Große Mittweida from the left.
particularities
In the 16th century, up to 1,000 fathoms of wood were rafted down the valley from the forests on the Fichtelberg. After the forests on the Große Mittweida were exhausted, the rafts were relocated to the Kleine Mittweida in 1579. Since the rafting was only possible when the watercourse swelled strongly, the schoolmaster took over this task. The students then had no school.
The Kleine Mittweida is one of the few rivers in Saxony that is used directly for drinking water . A drinking water protection area of around 950 hectares was set up for this purpose . The water is treated by adding calcium hydroxide to improve the pH value and by UV radiation for disinfection .
