The Hurlacher Heide is a semi-dry lawn in the immediate vicinity of the Lech river. The landowner is the municipality of Kaufering . The threatened grassland vegetation owes its emergence to the ice age alluvial gravel of the Lech and the Lech glacier. From May to July, the heather areas may only be entered on the marked paths - there are restricted access rights. The Hurlach Colony concentration camp cemetery is located in the protected area .

location

The Hurlacher Heide lies between Augsburg and Landsberg am Lech at Lech barrage 18 and is embedded in a riparian forest-like bank area. In the north, the protected area borders on the Lech , which makes a loop there. To the east is the concentration camp cemetery flanked by forest. The area is in turn bounded by the dike of the reservoir with the access road to the Kaufering run-of-river power station. In the south, the heather also ends at a strip of forest that is bordered by the road from the former federal road 17 to the parking lot. The alluvial forest on the western border follows the Lech downstream to the north.

description

The heather area lies in the buried and deep-lying Lechfeld . It is surrounded by approx. 15 m high slopes of the former Lech bed. Numerous rare animal and plant species can be found on the poor grassland. Due to the calcareous Lech gravel underground, calcareous plants settle , including protected orchids . The Hurlacher Heide is part of the core area of the Lechheiden , an umbrella term for numerous dry grasslands over 160 km along the Lech. As a result of the planned biotope network, an initiative of "Lebensraum Lechtal", its area is to increase in the near future, as it is to be connected with nearby dry slopes. In lech region near the under nature conservation standing area is one in regeneration contained gravel Heide . Such strongly sunny locations are the preferred home of the smooth snakes found here .
