Hussein Kamil , Sultan of Egypt from 1914 to 1917

Sultan Hussein Kamil ( Arabic السلطان حسين كامل as-Sultān Husayn Kāmil ; * November 21, 1853 ; † October 9, 1917 ) was Sultan of Egypt and King of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan from December 19, 1914 to October 9, 1917.

Hussein Kamil was born in 1853 as the second son of Ismail Pasha , the Khedive of the Ottoman province of Egypt . Both came from the dynasty of Muhammad Ali , which from 1867 onwards led the title of Khedive to Egypt instead of a Wali (governor) to express the nominal sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire over the de facto independent Egypt. After Ismail Pasha's dismissal in 1879, the older brother Hussein Kamils Tawfiq became Khedive of Egypt. This was followed in 1892 by his son Abbas II. Abbas was unable to assert himself politically against the British rule in Egypt that had existed since 1882 . He sympathized with the national movement and was deposed by the British at the beginning of the First World War on December 18, 1914. Great Britain officially declared Egypt its protectorate , the Sultanate of Egypt , whereby the last formal relations with the Ottoman Empire were broken. The British made Hussein Kamil sultan . In addition, they pushed through the switch to a war economy , which led to a widespread impoverishment of the population, as food prices rose sharply due to the purchasing power of British troops, but on the other hand, cotton prices were sharply reduced under British pressure. After Hussein Kamil's death in 1917, he was succeeded by his brother Ahmed Fuad as sultan.
