Hat stumps or hat blanks are intermediate products in the manufacture of hats .

The roughly pre-formed hat stumps are mostly made of hair and wool felt from rabbit hair or sheep's wool or plaited straw in various colors and sizes. They are further processed into finished hats by the milliner or hat maker . After finishing (applying liquid stiffening agents such as shellac or gelatine ) and heating in steam, the stump is shaped by plating (mounting the moistened stump on a hat block made of wood or metal) and gets its final appearance, the edge is trimmed, hemmed and folded. In addition, the hat can be provided with decorative stitching and applications. Then the lining and sweatband are sewn inside .
