Reed frogs (Hyperoliidae) are smaller, often very colorful and strikingly patterned frogs that are found in Africa south of the Sahara and on islands in the Indian Ocean . Most of the representatives live on plants above the ground and, like the tree frogs iwS (Hylidae), are equipped with adhesive discs on the fingers and toes, with which they are excellent for climbing. Only the genus Kassina is considered to be ground-dwelling. The tadpoles of the reed frogs usually stand out because of their large caudal fins. The genus Heterixalus is endemic to Madagascar , Tachycnemis occurs only in the Seychelles .
Taxonomy
In earlier systematics, some species of reed frogs were assigned to the row frogs (Rhacophoridae). Other authors counted the row frogs as a subfamily of the reed frogs. More recent reviews separate the previous genus Leptopelis from the reed frogs and assign their subfamily Leptopelinae to the long-fingered frogs (Arthroleptidae). At present, 18 genera (including several monotypical ones) with over 200 species are differentiated, with taxonomic questions still unanswered , especially in the by far most species-rich genus Hyperolius .
