Hyperopisus bebe ( Syn .: Mormyrus dorsalis , St. Hilaire , 1809) is an African freshwater fish from the Nile pike family(Mormyridae). He is in the northern tropical Africa in the rivers of the Sahel and the Great Landscape Sudan widespread and in the Nile south of Murchison Falls ( Albert Nile ) and in Senegal , Gambia , Niger , Bénoué , Volta , Ouémé , Ogun , Logone and Chari ago .

Hyperopisus bebe becomes a maximum of 51 cm long and 1 kg in weight. Its body is moderately elongated and laterally flattened with a standard length that is 3.9 to 6.2 times its height. The head length is 4.6 to 6.2 times the standard length, the head is 1.6 to 2.3 times longer than it is wide. The anal fin is 4 to 7.7 times longer than the short dorsal fin, the pectoral fins twice as long as the pelvic fins. The tail fin stalk is 1.5 to 3.6 times longer than it is tall. The caudal fin is forked. Like all Nilhechte, Hyperopisus bebe is capable of electrical communication and electrical orientation. Electroreceptors are located on the head, back and abdomen. They are missing on the sides and on the tail fin stalk, where the electrical organ can be found.

Way of life

Hyperopisus quiver lives in flowing and standing waters, feeds on molluscs and reproduces in the rainy season. In one examined female, 18,924 eggs were counted.

Systematics

Hyperopisus bebe is the only species of the genus Hyperopisus, which is monotypical . There are two subspecies: Hyperopisus bebe bebe (Lacepède, 1803) and Hyperopisus bebe occidentalis Günther, 1866.
