The Ouémé is a river in Benin , West Africa .
geography
With a length of 510 km and a catchment area of around 50,000 km², the Ouémé is the largest river in the West African state of Benin . Its catchment area extends over almost half of the country. It rises as an affon in the Atakora mountains of Benin and is only called after the mouth of the Alpouro Ouémé. Its course is almost exclusively in a southerly direction. It flows into the Gulf of Guinea on the coast of Benin over Lake Nokoué and the adjoining Porto-Novo Bay near the city of Cotonou .
The Ouémé has an average gradient of 0.9 m / km, in the upper reaches it is 20 m / km. The water temperature varies between 26 and 32 ° C depending on the season.

In a study on Ouémé May 1999 to March 2001 50 fish species from 18 families were ( Protopteridae , Polypteridae , Clupeidae , Osteoglossidae , Mormyridae , Hepsetidae , Alestidae , Distichodontidae , Citharinidae , Bagridae , Claroteidae , Schilbeidae , Clariidae , Mochokidae , Channidae , centropomidae , Cichlidae , Anabantidae ) detected.
