Hyphoderma multicystidium is a mushroom species from the family of the butterfly relatives (Meruliaceae). It forms carpet-like, membranous fruiting bodies of whitish color and grows on bushes. The species is common in large parts of Europe.

features

Macroscopic features

Hyphoderma multicystidium has resupinate, membranous-waxy fruiting bodies typical of the genus Hyphoderma , which initially grow in circles in groups and later fuse. They are whitish to cream-colored when young, darker to almost ocher-colored when old or when dry. Their hymenium is smooth under the naked eye, but under a magnifying glass they reveal hostile bores and protruding cystids . The edge is fibrous or rhizomorphic.

Microscopic features

As with all Hyphoderma species, the hyphae structure of Hyphoderma multicystidium is monomitic, i.e. it shows exclusively generative hyphae . The 2–3  µm wide hyphae are hyaline , thin-walled and richly branched. Their septa always have buckles . The cystids are numerous, cylindrical, and blunt. At 60–80 × 5–7 µm, they protrude slightly beyond the fruit layer. The basidia of the species are club-shaped and slightly waisted and covered with oil droplets. They have four, more rarely two, sterigmata and measure 35–50 × 5–7 µm. They have a buckle at the base . Their spores are ellipsoid, hyaline and thin-walled. They measure 10–12 × 4–5 µm and have several small or a few large oil droplets in the protoplasm .

distribution

The known distribution of the species covers large parts of Europe from the Canary Islands to Russia , it is considered rare everywhere.

ecology

Hyphoderma multicystidium grows on flowering plants such as rockrose ( Cistus spp.), Tree heather ( Erica arborea ) and Juniperus macrocarpa . It is typically found in maquis or heather societies .
