Hyphoderma obtusiforme is a mushroom species from the family of the butterfly relatives (Meruliaceae). It forms carpet-like, membranous fruiting bodies of whitish color and grows on dead wood of coniferous and deciduous trees . The species is common in large parts of western and southern Europe.

features

Macroscopic features

Hyphoderma obtusiforme has resupinate, membranous-waxy fruiting bodies typical of the genus Hyphoderma . They are whitish to cream in color. Their hymenium is smooth under the naked eye, the edge is not clearly contoured.

Microscopic features

As with all Hyphoderma species, the hyphae structure of Hyphoderma obtusiforme is monomitic, i.e. it only has generative hyphae . The 3–4  µm wide hyphae are hyaline , thin-walled and strongly interwoven, the septa always have buckles . The cystids are cylindrical and more or less waisted in the middle. They are not encrusted and are around 50–80 × 8–10 µm in size. The basidia of the species are club-shaped to approximately urn-shaped, have four sterigmata and measure 30–40 × 6–8 µm. They have a buckle at the base . Their spores are narrow ellipsoid, hyaline and thin-walled. They measure 10–12 × 5–6 µm and are covered with oil droplets. Hyphoderma obtusum has a similar microstructure, but has rounder spores without oil droplets.

distribution

The known distribution of the species covers large parts of southern and western Europe.

ecology

Hyphoderma obtusiforme grows on rotten dead wood of coniferous and deciduous trees . Host species include the Norway spruce ( Picea abies ) and the pine ( Pinus pinea ).
