Hyphoderma obtusum is a mushroom species from the family of the butterfly relatives (Meruliaceae). It forms carpet-like, membranous fruiting bodies of whitish color and grows on dead wood of conifers . The species is common in large parts of western and southern Europe.

features

Macroscopic features

Hyphoderma obtusum has resupinate, membranous-waxy fruiting bodies typical of the genus Hyphoderma . They are whitish to cream-colored or gray-pink. Your hymenium is smooth under the naked eye (but can show pores under the magnifying glass), the edge is not clearly contoured.

Microscopic features

As with all Hyphoderma species, the hyphae structure of Hyphoderma obtusum is monomitic, i.e. it only has generative hyphae . The 3–4  µm wide hyphae are hyaline , thin-walled and strongly interwoven, the septa always have buckles . The cystids are cylindrical and more or less waisted in the middle. They are not encrusted and are around 50–80 × 8–10 µm in size. The basidia of the species are club-shaped to approximately urn-shaped, waisted in the middle, have four sterigmata and measure 30–40 × 6–8 µm. They have a buckle at the base . Their spores are egg-shaped to ellipsoid, hyaline and thin-walled. They measure 8–10 × 5–6 µm and, in contrast to the very similar Hyphoderma obtusiforme, are not covered with oil droplets.

distribution

The known distribution of the species covers large parts of southern and western Europe, but it is considered rare everywhere.

ecology

Hyphoderma obtusum grows on dead wood of conifers . Host species include Norway spruce ( Picea abies ), black pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) and European larch ( Larix decidua ).
