The hypochloremia , as hypochloraemic alkalosis is designated, an electrolyte imbalance with a lack of chlorides in the body with decrease in the chloride concentration in blood . The normal plasma level is 95 to 110 mmol / l.
An isolated chlorine deficiency is unusual, and other abnormalities are usually found.
root cause
A chloride deficiency can occur for a number of reasons:
- Desiccosis due to severe vomiting or diarrhea
- Hypoventilation and respiratory acidosis
- Metabolic alkalosis , for example in hyperemesis gravidarum
- Cystic fibrosis
- Pyloric stenosis or other stenosis of the stomach outlet
- Uremia
- as a side effect of hydrochlorothiazide
Clinical manifestations
Clinical criteria are:

- Polyhydramnios
- Absence of meconium
- prolonged neonatal icterus
- Muscle hypotension and lethargy

- Failure to thrive
- constipation
- watery diarrhea
- Salty taste on the skin

Treatment consists of electrolyte replacement.
