Hypsauchenia is a genus of humpback chirps from the subfamily Centrotinae , which occurs in the eastern Palearctic and Indomalaic regions. There are five known species of this genus.
features
The chirps are bizarre in shape, with a very large forward, upwardly curved extension of the pronotum, which is usually forked at the tip. The process directed backwards is mostly straight and has a more or less distinct, dorsal cusp. The head is three-lobed, about as wide as it is high.
Some species of the genus Cladonota (e.g. Cladonota apicalis ) look similar. However, it cannot be assumed that the two genera are more closely related. Like Cladonota apicalis, the species H. hardwickii is sometimes also called "Horseshoe-shaped Treehopper" because of its striking shape.
