The IAR-818 is a Romanian multi -role aircraft .
development
The IAR-818 was designed by Radu Manicatide at the ICRMA plant in Bucharest -Băneasa as a further development of the cargo and medical aircraft IAR-817 from 1955. It differs from this one by the more powerful engine and the end caps on the outer wings, similar to those of the Polish PZL-101 , while the IAR-817 has rounded surfaces. The first flight took place in 1960. Then the type was released for series production and an unknown number was produced.
The pattern was intended for operation on unpaved surfaces and the construction was therefore made correspondingly robust. Thanks to the high-mounted tail boom, which made access from the stern much easier, it had a decidedly multi-purpose character. By quickly changing the interior, the aircraft could be used as a cargo , surveillance, aerial photo , liaison and courier or mail aircraft. In the medical version , it could carry a lying patient and another in a sitting position or alternatively a carer on a stretcher. As an agricultural aircraft , the IAR-818 was equipped with a 300 kg chemical container instead of the rear seats. In this configuration, the maximum take-off mass was up to 1300 kg. The model was also suitable as a dropping aircraft for parachutists and for towing gliders .
In 1965 the seaplane IAR-818H with two single-stage floats appeared .
construction
The IAR-818 is a cantilever high- wing aircraft in composite construction . The fuselage is formed from a tubular steel frame with duralumin planking. Access doors are located on both sides of the fuselage, in the stern and in the floor of the fuselage. The extremely thin and high mounted tail boom connects to the cabin. The wing consists of a wooden frame covered with plywood. The tail unit made of tubular steel has a normal construction, the horizontal stabilizer is supported with V-struts towards the fuselage. The nose wheel landing gear is rigid, single-wheel and equipped with low-pressure tires for use on unpaved areas. The wheels can be exchanged for skis or swimmers.
