The European Democratic Education Community (EUDEC) is a non-profit association whose aim is to promote democratic education in Europe.

Members

There are 8000 members from 29 countries (as of November 2018). This includes 44 schools with around 7,800 students, 26 start-up initiatives, two institutions and 400 individuals. Many of them have decades of experience with democratic education, such as the Kapriole in Freiburg (since 1997), the Freie Schule Frankfurt (since 1974) or Summerhill (since 1921). Within the EUDEC, students are active at all organizational levels: as individual members, in the organization and implementation of conferences, the planning and implementation of projects and on the board.

Cooperations and activities

The association cooperates with the Federal Association of Free Alternative Schools and the British Phoenix Education Trust.

The association organizes conferences, meetings and seminars and supports the networking of democratic schools, among other things through school partnerships and student exchanges.

The association seeks dialogue with representatives of the state education system in the European countries of its members. Regional chapters for Hungary, France and Greece have been set up to facilitate the exchange of information.

The association cooperates with other European institutions such as the European Council , the European Union within the framework of the Erasmus program , the Swiss Union of Student Organizations (USO) and the Organizing Bureau of European School Student Unions (OBESSU).

In 2016, EUDEC took part in the World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg , to which the European Council had invited. In 2018, a member school, the Netzwerk Schule (Berlin), took part in Free to Speak, Safe to Learn together with ten state schools from different European countries . Democratic Schools for All project conference, which took place in the Wergeland Center at the invitation of the European Council in Oslo.

The association has been mentioned in several publications on inclusive education .

history

From 2008 to 2009 the association was an official project of the World Decade "Education for Sustainable Development" of the United Nations . The association was founded on February 16, 2008, and it was entered in the register of associations in March 2009. During this period, the first conference called the European Democratic Education Conference took place in Leipzig from July 28 to August 2. Like the association, it was abbreviated to EUDEC and organized by members of the International Democratic Education Conference (IDEC) . One motive for organizing a European conference was to reduce the high travel costs associated with participating in international conferences, since IDEC also takes place regularly on non-European continents.

The first conference was supported by the UK's Phoenix Education Trust. It was opened by Thomas Krüger , President of the Federal Agency for Civic Education . The host was the Freie Schule Leipzig .

Since then, the conference has taken place annually in various European countries and contributes significantly to European networking and coordination. Integrated into it is the general assembly (of the association), which elects the seven to eleven-member board and other project managers every two years and votes on all important decisions.

The abbreviation IDEC @ EUDEC means that the European and the international conference for democratic education are held together, the IDEC is, so to speak, a visit to the EUDEC. As a rule, the "C" in EUDEC stands for "Community" as in the club name, but occasionally also for "Conference". For example, on the EUDEC website for the Greek chapter (accessed on April 6, 2019) it says "We are also the organizers of EUDEC18 (European Democratic Education Conference)."
