The IEC 60870 - International Electrotechnical Commission - describes a general, open communication standard for industrial automation, which is used in the areas of infrastructure automation (switchgear control technology , telecontrol technology , network control technology ). The protocol Although provides a universal standard is, but leaves a wide scope for specific applications.

In Germany, the IEC 60870 is published as the DIN standard DIN EN 60870.

Overview

The standard for telecontrol technology is based on the following IEC specifications:

  • IEC 60870–5–1 transmission frame formats
  • IEC 60870–5–2 transmission procedures
  • IEC 60870–5–3 structure of the application data
  • IEC 60870–5–4 definition and coding of information elements
  • IEC 60870–5–5 basic application functions

With the IEC 60870-5 series of standards, it was achieved that devices and systems for telecontrol and substation control technology from different manufacturers can communicate with one another without any fundamental adaptation developments .

The very general description of the protocol standard makes it necessary to subdivide the IEC 60870-5 series of standards into individual parts in order to achieve interoperability of the devices communicating with one another. The following parts of the IEC 60870-5 series of standards have become important:

  • IEC 60870–5–101 Application-related standard for telecontrol tasks (serial communication)
  • IEC 60870–5–102 Basic functions for counting value transmission
  • IEC 60870–5–103 standard for the transmission of protective messages and fault record disposal (within a switchgear)
  • IEC 60870–5–104 Application-related standard for telecontrol tasks in IP networks

The interface uses a signal-oriented data model. Each telegram represents a data point, such as B. a measured value, setpoint, command or alarm. This telegram is defined via an address and a data type. The address then determines which signal it is, i.e. H. The sender and recipient must know the meaning of the address.

The series of standards has found widespread use in communication networks for the monitoring and control of infrastructure networks (electricity, gas, water, pipelines, etc.), especially in Europe and Asia.

The IEC created the following specification for the networking of control systems:

  • IEC 60870-6 remote control protocol, compatible with ISO and ITU standards

IEC 60870-5-101

The IEC 60870-5-101 is an official communication standard for telecontrol technology.

The protocol is used as a general transmission protocol between (network) control systems and remote control terminals. The messages are typically transmitted via serial connections (ITU-T V.24 ( EIA-232 ) / ITU-T V.28). It is an asynchronous protocol with Hamming distance 4. The telegram frame corresponds to FT1.2.

With the standard IEC 60870-5-101 it was achieved that devices and systems of the telecontrol and station control technology from different manufacturers can communicate with one another without any fundamental adaptation developments. The degrees of freedom of the standard allow various supplier-specific profiles (e.g. the telegram types and functions used). The profiles can be coordinated with one another using an interoperability list. This standard has found widespread use, especially in Europe and Asia.

IEC 60870-5-102

The IEC 60870-5-102 is an official communication standard for the transmission of meter readings in electricity networks. The messages are typically transmitted via serial connections and the telegram frame corresponds to FT1.2 .

IEC 60870-5-103

The IEC 60870-5-103 is an official communication standard for the transmission of messages of digital protection devices within a substation control to transfer to protect messages and fault records. The protection device works in communication as a slave, which spontaneously transmits data to the master (substation control system) or is polled by it cyclically.

Due to the high level of market penetration in Europe, the company has switched to integrating control devices and regulators in addition to digital protective devices. The control commands and control messages were originally transported within the protocol in the private area and documented device-specifically. In 1998 the VDEW (now BDEW ) issued a standardization recommendation for these so-called combination devices.

IEC 60870-5-104

The IEC 60870-5-104 is a general transmission protocol between (network) control systems and substations .

The telegrams are transmitted using the TCP / IP Internet protocol . The protocol has general capabilities in the context of SCADA applications.

In contrast to the IEC 60870-5-101, which establishes connections via serial interfaces, the IEC 60870-5-104 interface enables communication via networks ( LAN and WAN ). Commercially available network components ( routers ) can be used (industrial components should be used in switchgears). The TCP port 2404 is used as the standard.

With the standard IEC 60870-5-104 it was achieved that devices and systems of telecontrol and control technology from different manufacturers can communicate with one another without any fundamental adaptation developments. The degrees of freedom of the standard allow various supplier-specific profiles (e.g. the telegram types and functions used). The profiles can be coordinated with one another using an interoperability list. This standard has found widespread use, especially in Europe and Asia.

The telecontrol protocol IEC 60870-5-104 is also suitable as a field or station bus. The use as a station bus also enables direct communication between individual devices.

IEC 61850 , which is based on an object-oriented data model , is also used today as a station or field bus based on TCP / IP .

IEC 60870-6

TASE.2 is part of the IEC 60870-6 series of standards, in which services, the protocol and an object model are described. With IEC 60870-6 TASE.2, information users and information providers can be linked in a standardized way. This coupling is independent of the operating system platform ( UNIX , Windows ...) and transmission media (TCP / IP, ISO / OSI, fieldbus ...). The standard is based on the ISO 9506 Manufacturing Messaging Specification (MMS) standard .
