IWB (Industrielle Werke Basel) is the company for energy , water and telecommunications in the canton of Basel-Stadt ( Switzerland ). As an institution under public law , the company has been independent since 2010 and works closely with the Department of Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

Field of activity

IWB's activities essentially include the areas of electricity supply , water supply , natural gas supply, district heating supply and waste recycling as well as energy and telecommunications services.

As an electricity supplier, IWB supplies the canton of Basel-Stadt with around 1,600  GWh of electricity per year. This is mainly produced in eight hydropower plants and wind power plants in France and Germany, in which IWB is involved. A smaller part is produced in local combined heat and power plants. To compensate for fluctuations in production, IWB also trades in electricity.

IWB supplies its customers in the canton of Basel-Stadt and in neighboring areas with around 28 million m³ of drinking water via a 568-kilometer pipeline network . This comes entirely from groundwater obtained in two plants .

In the field of natural gas supply, IWB is active far beyond the canton and supplies 406,000 people in the canton of Basel-Stadt as well as in parts of the cantons of Basel-Landschaft and the Fricktal with around 4,000 GWh of natural gas via its 1,040-kilometer network . This is completely obtained from Gasverbund Mittelland AG . The natural gas supply, which began in 1852, is IWB's oldest division.

IWB supplies around 1,000 GWh of district heating. Half of this is produced in the waste incineration plant. A good 40% is produced from natural gas in the Voltastrasse district heating plant and the top-of-the-line heating plant Bahnhof, around 10% in the Basel wood-fired power plant from wood chips.

In addition to its traditional supply activities, IWB also offers heating technology services and operates a 299 km long fiber optic network for broadband internet and telephony .

history

IWB has its origins in the private gas industry founded in 1852. This was nationalized in 1867. In 1875 the water supply was integrated into the gas works and in 1882 the Lange Erlen pumping station, the first of the two groundwater works that are active today, was put into operation. In 1899 the newly established Basel electricity company was added, but in 1908 it was separated from the gas and waterworks. In 1942 the plants began using district heating.

In 1978 the electricity company was merged with the gas and water supply divisions and IWB was formed from it. In 1998, the waste recycling plant was integrated into this. Since January 1, 2010, IWB has been an independent company owned by the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
