Ian Clunies Alsop (born June 14, 1943 in Wembley ) is a former British track cyclist and later Mexican cycling trainer and bicycle frame builder.

Athletic career

Even as a junior, Ian Alsop finished on the podium at British rail championships. Between 1962 and 1968 he won a total of five British championship titles in the disciplines of tandem races and two-man team driving as well as several places in the top three. At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966 , he won the scratch race over ten miles and finished seventh in the 1000 meter time trial .

Alsop also started at the UCI track world championships , in the sprint as well as in the team pursuit, but did not achieve any podium places. In 1968 he took part in the Olympic Games in Mexico City and started there in the sprint and in the team pursuit , but remained without a medal. From 1966 he also tried his hand at staying , but was not as successful as in other railway disciplines. In 1967 he won in the early evening of the six day race of London , the London amateur Six Days with his partner Tony Gowland .

After a dispute with the British Cycling Federation , Ian Alsop ended his cycling career in 1968 and emigrated to Mexico. There he initially worked as a national rail coach. He builds bicycle frames for the US company Raysport . Alsop continues to race in the Masters class for Mexico . At the Huntsman World Senior Games in 2002 he won gold in the 55-59 age group on a mountain bike .
