Ian Axford
Sir William Ian Axford (born January 2, 1933 in Dannevirke , New Zealand , † March 13, 2010 in Napier , New Zealand) was a New Zealand astrophysicist . Ian Axford was director at the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy from 1974 until his retirement .
Axford studied mathematics and engineering at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand), in Manchester and in Cambridge / UK. He received his PhD from Manchester University in 1960. In 1967 he became a professor at Cornell University in the USA, from 1967 to 1974 he was professor of physics and applied physics at the University of California in San Diego. In 1974 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director of the then MPI for Aeronomy.
A New Zealand "Fellowship in Public Policy" is named after Axford.

The asteroid (5097) Axford was named after him.
