The evergreen candytuft ( Iberis sempervirens ) is an evergreen, spreading subshrub with white flowers from the family of the cruciferous plants (Brassicaceae). The natural range is in Europe. The species is often used as an ornamental shrub because of the decorative flowers.

The Evergreen candytuft is an evergreen , spreading to 30 centimeters high shrub . The leaf blade of the foliage leaves is simple, leathery, 1 to 3 rarely 5 centimeters long, 2 to 5 millimeters wide, oblong spatulate to lanceolate, blunt with a pointed base, entire and glabrous.

The flowers are arranged in lateral, 3 to 4 centimeters wide bunches that elongate towards fruit ripeness. The sepals are 2 to 4 millimeters long, oblong or ovate. The petals are white and turn slightly pink as they fade. The adaxial pair is 3 to 6 millimeters long and 1 to 3 millimeters wide, the abaxial pair is 5 to 13 millimeters long and 2 to 7 millimeters wide. The species blooms in May. The fruits are round to broadly ovate, 6 to 8 millimeters long and 5 to 6 millimeters wide. The seeds are narrowly winged and 2 to 3 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location requirements

The natural range is in Europe in Spain, France, Italy and on the Balkan Peninsula ; in Africa in Morocco and Algeria and in Asia in Syria and Turkey. The species was naturalized on the British Isles , in Romania but also in North and South America. The evergreen candytuft grows in steppes and dry forests on moderately dry to fresh, slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded locations. The species loves warmth and is frost hardy . The distribution area is assigned to the winter hardiness zone 6a with mean annual minimum temperatures of −23.3 to −20.6 ° C (−10 to −5 ° F).

The Evergreen candytuft ( Iberis sempervirens ) is a kind of the genus of Iberis (Iberis) in the family of the Brassicaceae (Brassicaceae). There the genus is assigned to the tribe Iberideae. It was first scientifically described by Carl von Linné in 1753 in the Species Plantarum . The generic name Iberis chosen by him is derived from the Latin hiberis for a plant family that is considered poisonous and similar to cress. The specific epithet sempervirens also comes from Latin and means "always green".
