The ibug (short for industrial site redesign ) is a festival for urban art that has been taking place annually in West Saxony since 2006. The creators, a team of numerous volunteer organizers and helpers, look for derelict, often demolished industrial sites, which are redesigned by international artists using painting, graffiti , illustrations, installations and multimedia art. Both the history of the fallow land and its architecture are incorporated into the works without restricting the creativity of the participants. The result will then be presented to the international audience at a three-day festival weekend and accompanied by a program of music, film and design.

Most recently, the festival took place from August 24 to 26, 2018 and from August 31 to September 2, 2018 in the needle and sinker factory of the VEB Kombinat Textima in Chemnitz and attracted around 18,000 visitors. In August 2019 the event took place in Reichenbach in Vogtland . Further dates are not yet known. [outdated]

history

The beginnings of ibug can be found in Meerane in 2006 and go hand in hand with the artist Tasso's search for new opportunities for development. For the first edition of the festival he chose an industrial wasteland of the former IFA works in Meerane , which had already been used to offer graffiti artists from the region a legal opportunity to produce their works. A total of thirteen graffiti artists were involved in this first industrial redevelopment. Until 2011 the event took place in various abandoned industrial buildings in Meerane. From 2012, other cities in West Saxony were added, including Zwickau, Glauchau, Plauen and Crimmitschau. Meanwhile, the ibug has developed into a world-famous and renowned festival for urban art and attracts thousands of visitors every year. It opened for the first time in 2016 in Limbach-Oberfrohna, on the occasion of the “Day of Saxony”, for a second weekend. In 2017 and 2018 the ibug took place in Chemnitz.

According to the organizers, around 100 national and international artists were represented at the ibug 2016. The event counted a total of more than 7,000 guests.

In 2010, the main organizer Thomas Dietze was recognized as one of 90 winners of the “PlusPunkt Kultur” competition organized by the Federal Association for Cultural Education for Children and Young People .

The artistic claim

The artists represented at the ibug have a common denominator: the art of the street and public space. They are given the opportunity to let their creativity run free and then present the result to an international audience. Both the history and the architecture are included in the own works. Another important factor is the interaction, on the one hand with the environment and on the other hand with each other. The joint creation of a total work of art should also lead to connections between the individual creatives. There are no guidelines for political or sociocultural thoughts on the part of the makers, but also no restrictions in this direction. The ephemeral is an indispensable part of the work with the background of the dilapidated fallow land. Street art is temporary and so it is part of the ibug concept that the areas covered will disappear sooner or later.

The social claim

The social claim begins with the team of volunteers who - some of them new, some of whom have been with us for years - invest their time, their skills and their hearts in the festival every year. The ibug serves you as well as the invited international artists as a big gathering not only on a creative but also on a personal level. The variety of different styles, techniques and working methods not only offers a unique opportunity for exchange, but also a snapshot of the scene. The ibug is not a self-contained event, but an open event that aims to provide food for thought and new impulses in the region in which it takes place. Old residents reminisce upon entering the premises and see the places of their past in a new light. The ibug shows the possibility of art to revitalize long-abandoned places. It serves the enrichment of all participants, the artists and the region, but not the profit.
