Icilio Bacci

Icilio Bacci (born as Baccich ) (* July 2, 1879 in Fiume ; † August 28, 1945 at Cosala ) was a lawyer and notary , senator of the fascist government , mayor and district president of Fiume. He was convicted in absentia as a war criminal in 1944 .

Life

Bacci studied law in Florence and Rome (exams 1902) and became a lawyer and notary in Fiume. In 1910 he was elected mayor of Fiume by the irredentist majority. He served as a volunteer in the Italian Army during World War I and was highly decorated. After the war he founded a publishing house with his brother Iti Bacci and spread nationalist, later fascist, propaganda. He belonged to the Associazione Nazionalista Italiana , which was later transferred to the PNF . Among other things, he made use of the sports teams in order to propagate the affiliation to the internationally successful Italy in the sense of hegemony . He also used the police apparatus to consolidate his power. From 1924, at the time of the Italian rule over Fiume , he was responsible for the police and the judiciary, and in 1929 became provincial governor. He founded the health department and a hospital, and provided ambulances and ambulances. In 1934 he was appointed senator for life and thus belonged to the closest ruling circle of the PNF . In April 1944 he was convicted in absentia as a war criminal in Rome. He stayed on in Fiume, where the Wehrmacht protected him as long as possible. Kidnapped by partisans in Fiume on August 28, 1945, he was declared dead on March 29, 1946. He is said to have been shot dead by partisans near Karlovac .
