Icilio Guareschi (born December 24, 1847 in San Secondo Parmense near Parma , † June 20, 1918 in Turin ) was an Italian chemist ( organic chemistry ) and chemical historian.

Guareschi graduated from the University of Bologna in 1870 (where he took part in the Third War of Independence as a volunteer in 1866 ), was during his doctorate (1871) at the Institute of History of Natural Sciences in Florence and after his doctorate professor at the Polytechnic in Livorno . In 1876 he became professor at the University of Siena and in 1879 full professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Turin .

Guareschi was particularly concerned with the synthesis of pyridines and their derivatives. He wrote the first publication of the Camps quinoline synthesis and the Guareschi-Thorpe condensation for the synthesis of 2-pyridone . He also dealt with pharmacy, toxicology and chemical history, among other things he wrote a twelve-volume Storia della chimica published in 1904 and is considered one of the founders of chemical history in Italy with many publications (including on Amadeo Avogadro and Domenico Guglielmini , whose importance as a crystallographer he he recognized). His introduction to the chemistry of alkaloids was also published in German (1896/97 Berlin). With Francesco Selmi he edited the Enciclopedia di Chimica scientifica e industriale ( called the Guareschi in Italy ) from 1868 to 1881 , with a new edition in 13 volumes from 1899.

In 1912 he became a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei .
