The Neunspringe brewery in Worbis

The Neunspringe brewery is a beverage manufacturer from Leinefelde-Worbis in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

history

Kuntze Brewery

In 1867 beer production began in the H. Carl Kuntze brewery in Worbis . It was later renamed the Neunspringe Brewery. The name Neunspringe goes back to an old field name, which in turn is derived from nine springs in the source area of the Hahle , from which the brewery gets its spring water.

After the death of the company founder Carl Kuntze in 1895, his sons Karl and Thilo continued the company. The beer was sold throughout the Eichsfeld area, for which a branch was initially established in Duderstadt in addition to the Worbis site . Sales locations in neighboring areas followed, including St. Andreasberg , Bleicherode , Nordhausen , Mühlhausen and Kelbra . Before the First World War, Neunspringer beer was delivered to Hannoversch Münden , Kassel , Eisenach and Erfurt .

The First World War and its aftermath restricted beer production. In 1929 the production volume in Thuringia was 1.6 million hectoliters, only 80% of the pre-war level. The Neunspringer brewery was also affected by this. In the 1930s, the company began bottling , trucks were procured and the stylized 9 , which has remained almost unchanged to this day, was introduced as the company logo . Thanks to these innovations, the company's sales were stabilized after the global economic crisis . During the Second World War , the company was forced to brew thin beer due to a lack of raw materials . Karl Kuntze Jr., son of Thilo Kuntze and designated successor to the Kuntze brothers, who led the company, was killed in the war.

After the end of the war, the Worbis-based company was in the Soviet zone of occupation . Nevertheless, production in the undamaged factory was able to continue largely seamlessly. However, the branches in Duderstadt, Herzberg and St. Andreasberg were now on the other side of the zone border and the sales market in the lower Eichsfeld and western Harz fell away. Hops, which the company had previously obtained from Hallertau in Bavaria , became a scarce raw material - until hops began to be grown in Eichsfeld. In 1948 the family business was transferred to the daughters of Thilo Kuntze. The continuing shortage of raw materials led to the production of the Neunspringer Double Caramel -Bieres on malt , which is in the East enjoyed great popularity. On December 1, 1953, the company was finally expropriated by the GDR regime and the brewery was declared public property. The entrepreneurial family fled the GDR and settled in the company's previous branch in Duderstadt.

VEB Brewery Neunspringe

From then on, the company was run as a state-owned company , it had to supply the Worbis district and parts of the Eisenach district . Extensive investments were made for this, including in a new malt store and a new bottling plant , with the commissioning of which the classic swing-top bottles from the former Kuntze brewery were replaced. For the 100th anniversary of the company, the production volume of the company had doubled compared to 1953. In addition to beer, from the 1960s onwards, the modernized company also produced non-alcoholic drinks, including mineral water, lemonade and Vita Cola, which was produced in numerous breweries in the GDR . Today's Neunspringe Cola emerged from their recipe, the label of which is still based on the earlier Vita Cola label.

In 1969 the Neunspringe brewery was incorporated into the VEB Beverage Combine in Erfurt, in which all breweries in the Erfurt district were combined. In the 1970s, further modifications and investments were made in the plant, including in 1973 in an enlarged steam generation plant. In 1975 the company in Worbis had 100 employees. In 1980 a new bottle filling plant was put into operation.

Reprivatisation and the present

The political change in the GDR brought the company, like the entire economy of the GDR, a slump in sales. The Treuhandanstalt took over the Worbis brewery and renamed it the Worbis monastery brewery . In 1994 the company was sold by the Treuhandanstalt to Thilo Kuntze, a great-grandson of the company founder, and three co-shareholders. They named the company back to the Neunspringe brewery . The company was completely modernized. A new boiler house, a new cooling system and a new brewhouse were built. Beer production quadrupled from 5,000 hectoliters in 1994 to 20,000 hectoliters in 1998. The product range was expanded, and the double caramel popular in the GDR was also produced again from 1998. Around eight million D-Marks had been invested in the brewery by 2002.

From 2007 the marketing area of the Neunspringer Brewery was expanded beyond Thuringia to Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg . In 2009 the brand rights of the insolvent Olbernhau brewery in the Ore Mountains were taken over and since then, Neunspringer beer has been supplied to Saxony under the brand names Olbernhauer Pilsener , Stülpner Starkbier and Böhmisch Hell . In 2015, the Neunspringe brewery acquired the “Vogelsberger” brand and the bottling plant for non-alcoholic beverages from the insolvent Alsfeld brewery in Hesse .
