History of origin

Bluebird - 78 by Alvino Rey: "Idaho" from September 1941

Jesse Stone had already gained some experience as leader of Territory Bands and wrote five compositions of his own before the idea for Idaho came to him - allegedly after a course with Cole Porter . He lyrically describes the hills and canyons of the US state of Idaho , to which the singer feels drawn because of his homesickness. Stone had it registered with the music publisher Chappell & Co. , which in turn registered the copyright with ASCAP . Alvino Rey recorded the song on September 19, 1941 together with the A-side It Is not A Dream Anymore for the record label Blue Bird (# 11331) and first published it in June 1942. The Pophitparade traded him to the third place spot. According to the Hollywood Reporter , Republic cinematographic rights were purchased for a film starring John Wayne about the history of the state.

Cover versions

Over the years, Stone's title developed into a jazz standard through the various cover versions . A first cover version recorded the Close harmony Quartet Merry Macs on February 21, 1942; however, this interpretation missed the charts. In the month of publication of the original (June 1942), two further cover versions were recorded: On June 2, 1942, Guy Lombardo picked up the title with his orchestra; its version proved to be a long-seller, selling three million copies in the 1940s, according to Billboard , Lombardo's version, like the original version, was the sixth most popular track on the jukebox in 1942 . Even Benny Goodman , of Idaho on June 17, 1942, Dick Haymes recorded as a singer, had a hit. His version, published in July 1942, came in fourth. Furthermore, had Tommy Dorsey also a success with the title.
