If is a song by the British rock band Pink Floyd , released on the 1970 Atom Heart Mother album .
If it was up to the end of 2001 to be included in the best of album Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd , which ultimately failed to materialize.
Conception
The song was composed and sung by Roger Waters . The song builds up in E major . Similar to Grantchester Meadows by Ummagumma (1969), published a year earlier , If has bucolic - folky features with a tendency to describe inner experience . During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Waters had developed a liking for picturesque ballads. He had tried this with Ron Geesin outside of Pink Floyd in the soundtrack for the pop art film The Body .
Live performances
If was performed live on John Peel 's radio show at the BBC's Paris Theater in London on July 16, 1970 . Here played Richard Wright in addition to his Farfisa -Orgel and electric bass . Later Roger Waters If played numerous times on his solo tours during the ' The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking ' tour of 1984/85 and 1987 on the occasion of the Radio KAOS tour. During these tours, the text and music of the piece were expanded.
