The music for the film If Beale Street Could Talk by Barry Jenkins was composed by Nicholas Britell and released on November 9, 2018 by Lakeshore Records.

History of origin

Beale Street in Memphis had become a metaphor for the world blacks were pushed into

In March 2018 it was announced that Nicholas Britell would compose the score for If Beale Street Could Talk . Previously, director Barry Jenkins and Britell worked closely on the film Moonlight . While Jenkins was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2017 Academy Awards , Britell was nominated for Best Score. Britell uses strings again in the music, as in the music for the film Moonlight , but this time with jazz sounds. This musical direction was also important as the namesake for the novel for the film. For the title of James Baldwin If Beale Street Could Talk , the author borrowed a line from the jazz song Beale Street Blues by WC Handy , the latter wrote in 1916 and became a jazz standard, so Marietta Steinhart of time online , "All niggers come from Beale Street, ”wrote Baldwin in a preliminary remark to the novel,“ Beale Street is our legacy. ”Beale Street, actually a street in Memphis, had become a metaphor for the world into which blacks were being pushed. The title of the song is also identical to that of the German translations of Baldwin's novel.

Regarding his collaboration with Jenkins, Britell said: “Together we explored a soundscape with brass and strings and dared to experiment with extreme values.” Britell said: When Jenkins first thought about what the world of music in film could be, he had Horns heard. For the sound of the 1970s, in which the Harlem-based story of James Baldwin is set, did Britell write a piece? for trumpets, flugelhorns and french horns. Feeling something was missing, he decided to add Strings after realizing that the overarching theme of the film was love in its many forms. "The strings stand for love and the brass for ups and downs," he said. "The brass can feel like ecstasy, but it can also feel very deeply melancholy."

reception

Matt Donnelly of The Wrap says that Britell gives Tish and Fonny orchestral string pieces so hauntingly and poignantly that a pull of the bow feels like hours in these intimate images. A review by The Associated Press stated that the melancholy horns looked as if they were inspired by Miles Davis ' Kind of Blue and shone with the love between the two, but also with the suffering they had unjustly suffered.

Chris Evangelista from Slash Film says Brittel's music is tremendously passionate and that he manages to find just the right notes to bring tears to your eyes: “The music is just so incredibly beautiful - it swells and builds up to the point where it feels like it's just bursting with pure electrical energy. The orchestral score is practically a character itself, so omnipresent and imposing. "
