Ignaz Guarini , actually Ignatius Guarini, SJ (* July 30, 1676 in Lecce , † April 28, 1748 in Dresden ) was court confessor of August III. , King of Poland and Elector of Saxony and his wife Maria Josepha of Austria .

Life

Father Guarini was a Jesuit professor of philosophy and mathematics, and lectured on controversial theology in Rome for 18 years .

Pope Clement XI. commissioned him, the Emperor Karl VI. To send a letter of thanks from the Curia in Vienna in 1719 on the occasion of the marriage of his niece Maria Josepha to the then Electorate of Saxony, Friedrich August. Then he also went to the Prince Elector in Venice, where he was still staying, to convey the congratulations to him too.

In 1739 he was elected by the Curia under Pope Clement XII. sent to the catholic court in Dresden to act as religious support for the ruling couple, but above all to strengthen the influence of the Vatican and the catholic church in the otherwise Protestant electoral state as their political advisor .

He was instrumental in the overthrow of Aleksander Józef Sułkowski as the first minister. He was also a supporter of the Italian builder Gaetano Chiaveri , whose artistic designs he significantly influenced. He also worked on the designs for the image program for the Dresden Court Church , which Lorenzo Mattielli implemented with 78 larger-than-life statues of saints for the facades, the tower and the two balustrades of the church.
