Igor Sergejewitsch Ivanov ( Russian Игорь Сергеевич Иванов , scientific transliteration Igor Sergeevič Ivanov ; born September 23, 1945 in Moscow ) is a Russian politician . He is a diplomat and was Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation from 1998 to 2004. From March 9, 2004 to July 17, 2007 he was Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation .

Ivanov is the son of a Russian father and a Georgian mother. He was a cadet at the Suvorov Military School in Moscow . In 1969 he graduated from the Maurice Thorez Institute for Foreign Languages ​​in Moscow with a degree in Spanish and English . He then worked as a research fellow at the Institute for World Economy and International Relations of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (IMEMO).

In 1973 he entered the diplomatic service of the Soviet Union , went to the trade department of the Russian embassy in Spain . In 1983 he moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow as a consultant, later assistant to the minister. In 1991 he became the Russian ambassador in Madrid . In 1994 Ivanov took over the post of First Deputy Foreign Minister. From September 11, 1998 to March 8, 2004 he was Russian Foreign Minister .

Ivanov pleads for a realistic and pragmatic Russian foreign policy that is oriented towards the economic and political strengthening of Russia. He rejects foreign policy adventures. Ivanov turned against the NATO mission in Yugoslavia ( Operation Allied Force ), calling Russia's participation in the peace mission a mistake. He also rejected the Third Gulf War against Iraq . In November 2003, Ivanov mediated between the opposition and President Eduard Shevardnadze during the Rose Revolution in Georgia . In May 2004, he mediated the change of power in Adjara and achieved the resignation of the Adjarian ruler Aslan Abashidze .

He is a member of the European Leadership Network .

Ivanov speaks Russian, English, Spanish and Georgian. He is married and has a daughter. During his diplomatic career in Spain, he enjoyed going to bullfights.
