Igor Anatolyevich Selensky

Igor Anatoljewitsch Selenski ( Russian Игорь Анатольевич Зеленский ; English transcription Igor Zelensky ; born July 13, 1969 in Labinsk ) is a Russian ballet dancer . Since 2016 he has been director of the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich.

Life

Igor Zelensky studied at the Ballet Institute in Tbilisi, among other things as a student of the Georgian choreographer Wachtang Tschabukiani , and at the Waganowa Institute in Saint Petersburg. In 1988 he made his debut at the Mariinsky Theater (then Kirov Ballet), where he was entrusted with numerous title roles in classical ballet, for example, he danced Romeo in Romeo and Juliet , Des Grieux in Manon , Albrecht in Giselle and Solor in La Bayadère . During this time, Igor Selenski was a guest soloist at various international ballet companies such as the New York City Ballet , the Royal Ballet in London, the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich, the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Boston Opera House, the San Francisco Opera and the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro . From 2001 to 2006 he worked as assistant to the director of the Athens National Theater.

While still active as a dancer at the Mariinsky Theater, Zelensky took over the artistic direction of the ballet in Novosibirsk from 2006 to 2015. From 2011 to 2016, as ballet director of the Stanislavsky and Nemirowitsch-Danschenko music theater , he was largely responsible for the company's increasing international reputation through numerous guest performances and extensive repertoire expansions with ballets by John Neumeier , Kenneth MacMillan and Roland Petit . During his time as assistant to the ballet director at the National Theater in Athens from 2001 to 2006, Igor Selenski staged ballet classics such as Don Quixote , Raymonda , Swan Lake , Sleeping Beauty and La Bayadère .

In August 2016, Selenski took over the management of the Bavarian State Ballet as Ivan Liška's successor and has since brought internationally renowned dancers such as Natalja Ossipowa , Osiel Gouneo, Vladimir Shklyarov, Maria Shirinkina and Ashley Bouder to Munich.

Igor Zelensky is married to the former ballet dancer of the Mariinsky Theater Yana Zelensky (Serebryakova) and has three children.
