The Igreja do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos (also known as Igreja Matriz de Matosinhos , Igreja de Matosinhos Paroquial or Igreja do Salvador 's (Church of the Savior)) is a church in the town of Matosinhos in the district of Porto in Portugal . It is a well-known place of pilgrimage and pilgrimage , place of Romarias and festivals in honor of Senhor de Matosinhos (Our Lord of Matosinhos). Bom Jesus is the Portuguese name for Jesus as the Man of Sorrows , or for the representation of Ecce homo .

Bom Jesus de Matosinhos was classified as a building of public interest in Portugal in 1982 ( imóvel deinterest público em Portugal ).

history

A church was built here in the 16th century, between 1559 and 1579, on behalf of the University of Coimbra , which had held the patronage of the parent municipality of Bouças since 1542. The management was in the hands of one of the most important architects working in Coimbra: João de Ruão , who received rice in 1350 according to the contract. This original structure was supplemented several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. a. the high choir and main altar were completely redesigned between 1726 and 1733 by the art carver Luís Pereira da Costa, with the collaboration of Ambrósio Coelho and various gilders. After this work was completed, a large three-day festival was celebrated from May 4 to 6, 1733, at which the revered Senhor de Matosinhos was brought to his new throne. Since then, this festival has been repeated every year and at least officially the pilgrimages to Matosinhos were justified with it. In reality, there was an old tradition of festivals and pilgrimages to the Bom Jesus de Bouças (Good Jesus of Bouças), as he was originally called, long before that.

From 1743 the church was revised and renewed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni , who also worked in Porto. Above all, the facade comes from him; He also had the nave lengthened a little, other windows installed and the two side chapels built next to the high altar. The result is one of the most elegant and exemplary Baroque facilities in Portugal. The work was financed by donations from emigrants who had made a fortune in Brazil and from “ex-votos” ( votive offerings ) from seafarers or fishermen who had been rescued from distress at sea.

Building

View through the arcades to the right side wall

The broad main facade of expansive dimensions is rhythmized by pilasters and strong, meandering beams , and swings in clear structures and a lush baroque decoration. The main portal in the center is flanked by two smaller entrances. On the sides, to the right and left, two bell towers with statues of Saints Peter and Paul in their niches .

The interior of the church forms a single, balanced harmony of simple whitewashed walls, gray granite , natural-colored dark wood and the shimmering gold of the richly carved altars. The basic structure still comes from the original Mannerist building: It consists of three naves ; the two side aisles are separated from the main aisle by five arches that sit on Ionic columns and date from the 16th century. Above it is a wooden coffered ceiling from the 17th century. In the side chapels there are baroque altars from Talha dourada , which were carved between 1746 and 1752 by Domingos Martins Moreira and gilded by José da Mota Manso; they also created the two beautiful pulpits . The frames and grilles of the windows are the work of Manuel da Costa Andrade, and were made between 1753 and 1754. On the right and left side walls there are also four long benches with carved backrests in the Rococo style by José Teixeira de Guimarães from 1772.

Main altar and chapel of the Igreja do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos

The sanctuary of the high choir is completely decorated with talha dourada like a treasure house ; Stylistically, the altar marks the transition from the high baroque estilo nacional to the late baroque style of Dom João V - the whole thing is the work of Luís Pereira da Costa from Porto and his assistants who worked on it from 1726 to 1733. In the transept also Talha dourada altars stand out in the chapels of the Blessed Sacrament and the Senhor dos Passos ; these were created from 1746 to 1750 in collaboration with Domingos Martins Moreira and José da Mota Manso.

organ

The organ builder Cristovão Ruiz (= Rodrigues) built a new organ according to a contract from 1710, which unfortunately has not been preserved. Nevertheless, there is a historical organ of the Nordic type on the gallery , with a 'Hamburg' facade with three towers. This was built in 1685 by the Dutch organ builder Michael Hensberg, originally for the Mosteiro dos Lóios in Porto. It was later moved here and renewed, reshaped and “Iberized” in 1859 by José António dos Santos. In 1992 it was restored by the Oficina e Escola de Organária (Office and School for Organ Building ) of Esmoriz, with the aim of restoring it to its original state. It has 10 registers, including some split ones, on a single manual.

effect

The veneration of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos was handed down by Portuguese sailors to Brazil, where there are some churches dedicated to him, in particular the Santuário do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in Congonhas , and the Igreja do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in Serro (Minas Gerais) ; also the Santuário do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matozinhos in Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG).
