The Italian painter Il Sassetta , actually Stefano di Giovanni di Consolo da Cortona (* around 1400 probably in Siena ; † April 1, 1450 in Siena) was one of the most important artists of the School of Siena in the first half of the 15th century . It belongs to the late Gothic style known as International Gothic , which developed from book illumination .

The first mention of the artist, who was probably born in Siena, according to another hypothesis in Cortona , comes from Siena in the year 1423. It is assumed that he was a student of Paolo di Giovanni Fei (* around 1345; † around 1411).

Sassetta devoted herself exclusively to religious subjects and developed a very personal style of International Gothic. He was looking for the perspective that had already been tried out in the early Renaissance in Florence , but did not succeed in mastering it completely. Characteristic are flowing lines and festive, bright red and purple tones.
